CODA: Cultivating, Organizing, Developing and Archiving Mixed-reality Content
How to cultivate, develop and incorporate how we use data in a MR environment is the theme of this conference. In 2005, the National Science Board of the National Science Foundation published “Long-Lived Digital Data Collections: Enabling Research and Education in the 21st Century,” which began a dialogue about the importance of data preservation and introduced the issue of the care and feeding of an emerging group they identified as “data scientists”: The interests of data scientists—the information and computer scientists, database and software engineers and programmers, disciplinary experts, curators and expert annotators, librarians, archivists, and others, who are crucial to the successful management of a digital data collection—lie in having their creativity and intellectual contributions fully recognized.”

As the seminal computer scientist Jim Gray articulated in 2003, where big data describes on the one hand extremely large data sets, it is also data that can through analysis, generate patterns and associations: “it can be understood to encompass all potential data generated by any dynamic process, in short life on Earth as we know it.” Including our cultural, scientific, political and economic processes. Among the many challenges facing “data scientists” like researchers, educators, and public and institutional providers using MR and immersive technology, is where to acquire data, how to manage, store and retrieve, and make data in all its forms accessible. Files types, sizes and platforms vary across disciplines, institutions and organizations. And the significant increase in the size of data can be overwhelming. We seek papers addressing but not limited to these issues:

1. Capture, collection and data validation
2. Curating
3. Multi-disciplinary collaboration around data sets for MR
4. Data processing
5. Developing
6. Digital libraries
7. Data management
8. Data analysis, modeling, visualization
9. Development and support of software tools
10. Funding
11. Data analysis, modeling, visualization (2D and 3D)
12. Sharing good practice in the teaching community
13. MR applications for private and public education
14. Open topic

Open Topic will be offered for abstracts that do not fit one of the suggested areas (above), but is consistent with the focus of THE CAAV. We encourage the submission of well-crafted abstracts on topics that explore a range of issues within VR/AR and related areas in visualization. The selected papers will be grouped according to overarching themes that emerge from the open call.

THE CAAV 2017 Conference Registration

The Higher Education Campus Alliance for Advanced Visualization (THE CAAV) is excited to announce its 2nd annual conference, to be held on 25th-27th October 2017 at the University of Wyoming Conference Center, Laramie, Wyoming.

Conference Feedback Form

The 2nd Annual CAAV Conference is aimed at all practitioners of visualization, those starting out, as well as those with a long-standing experience and will include:

· A keynote address by Dr. Maxine Brown (Electronic Visualization Laboratory, University of Illinois at Chicago), as well as a schedule that incorporates
· Technical presentations on collaborative data visualization, and rapid development of immersive environments,
· Strategic sessions on technology facility sustainability,
· A plethora of teaching and research applications which utilize visualization and virtual reality.

The first conference last year was hosted by The Center for Advanced Visualization and Experiential Analysis (CAVEA) at Metropolitan State University of Denver; with keynotes from Dr. Kenny Gruchalla (The National Renewable Energy Lab, and Dr. Kelly Gaither (Director of Visualization, Texas Advanced Computing Center. Subject matter varied from scientific data analysis and creative visualization, to hands on workshops using VR tech, and issues of financial and strategic facility management and operation.

THE CAAV is a volunteer-driven organization. Its purpose is to act as an information resource to worldwide higher education focusing on immersive visualization platforms, advanced video screen formats, advanced visualization software and issues of sustainability and operation for high-tech visualization facilities.

Founded in 2015, THE CAAV is now transitioning into a non-profit organization, and hopes to achieve its official status before the end of the year, with the support of Mechdyne. THE CAAV international membership roster now proudly rests at 150 members worldwide, represented by a wide variety of teaching and research-oriented higher education institutions, national labs, and colleges
